"In the distance" is a good thing.

If you don't have enough stressful apps in your life yet, PulsePoint has been useful for us. It reports all local fire/ambulance calls, and you can select specific incident types (e.g. "Vegetation Fire") to trigger an audible alert. Looks like Sonoma County is covered.
