Folks around here are are definitely hyper-aware. Understandable with significant devastation due to fires in recent years.
We're still relative noobs around here but the tension is palpable.

My wife and I lived "next door" to you in Marin County in the 1980s. I guess there were small fires sometimes, but I don't remember thinking much about them. Not sure if we were young and foolish, or if things really have changed that much. Probably both...

"In the distance" is a good thing.
If you don't have enough stressful apps in your life yet, PulsePoint has been useful for us. It reports all local fire/ambulance calls, and you can select specific incident types (e.g. "Vegetation Fire") to trigger an audible alert. Looks like Sonoma County is covered. There's also a web version at
